Duffel bags date back to the 17th century, taking their name from the town in Belgium where the original cloth was first made. Early duffels were cylindrical canvas bags with drawstring tops, but the term now loosely refers to any multi-purpose holdall that can be stuffed full and slung over one shoulder for ease of travel.
