Fall Essentials Marie Claire Editors Bought for September
From cozy layers to hydrating moisturizers, here are the products that will carry us through fall.
Welcome to our series showcasing some of our Marie Claire editors' fashion and beauty purchases this month. You'll discover the seasonal basics anchoring our wardrobes and the beauty buys that have us reconsidering our routines.
It's almost that time again when leaves will start to drop, temperatures will shift to a crisp in the air, and we’ll be ordering pumpkin spice lattes from our local coffee shops. That’s right, fall is practically knocking at our door. As we prepare for this shift in seasons, our closets and beauty cabinets are undergoing a few changes of their own, too. Beauty Editor Samantha Holender upgraded her collection of fall work outfits with a sharp blazer. Associate Social Editor Ashlyn Delaney purchased a hydrating face moisturizer that will nourish her skin during the colder months. And Senior Culture Editor Sadie Bell plans to master the art of layering with a pointelle tank top, that she'll layer beneath her favorite cashmere cardigans and knit sweaters.
Ahead, discover a list of other products that Marie Claire editors are buying for September.
Although there’s nothing I love more than crisp autumn air, I don’t exactly enjoy how my skin reacts to it. When temperatures begin to drop, I often deal with extreme dryness and discoloration, so my seasonal skincare routine involves a slew of hydrating products. Among them is this face gel from Dr. Jart+. It’s packed with nurturing ingredients like tiger grass (a tropical plant that is commonly used in herbal remedies). This gel is so soothing and it makes my skin appear plump and dewy after just one use. Plus, it boasts a smooth texture, so it’s easy to layer beneath makeup—whether I’m applying foundation, bronzer, or liquid blush. — Lauren Tappan, Fashion Editor
"Dissh has a chokehold on my wallet. Every fashion editor I've come into contact with has raved about the brand's gorgeous tailoring and high quality materials, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on a few pieces. I'll be honest: I had sky-high hopes for the label's Harley Smoke blazer and it lived up to my expectations. This oversized piece provides a bulky silhouette, but still has a narrow fit that looks flattering on my five-foot-two frame. I'll likely wear it with jeans come winter, but as we peak into fall, I'll be going matchy-matchy with Dissh's Pleated Skort. I'd size up on this one, but the fit is incredibly flattering and the length is work appropriate (if you have a casual office)." — Samantha Holender, Beauty Editor
"As temperatures cool down, my skin usually gets pretty dry (especially under my eyes). Not only is dealing with dry skin under the eyes irritating, but it also causes unwanted creasing and patching whenever I apply concealer. My solution? Dieux Skin's Forever Eye Mask paired with the brand's Miracle Eye Gel. These products instantly help to revive and plump my skin, making my makeup application process much easier. Also, every time I put on this eye mask, I feel like i'm treating myself to an at-home spa experience." — Jonelle Afurong, Junior Visual Designer
"I try to hold onto summer as long as possible, and it's usually still hot in New York well into September, so I recently found myself contributing to my ever-growing collection of pointelle tank tops. They’re easy to throw on for an effortless look, and the slow fashion brand Pretties (who invented the Baby Tee!) has very sweet ones. I got their Knock-Off tank and I love the delicate details and high-quality cotton. I’m sure I'll still be layering this tank as the warm weather starts to fade away. " — Sadie Bell, Senior Culture Editor
"While my wardrobe has transitioned into fall, I’m still clutching on to summer with my beauty routine—more specifically with my choice of fragrance. Lately, I’ve been favoring Skylar's Boardwalk Delight perfume, which smells like the yummiest, happiest memories of my childhood all wrapped into one. Think eating cotton candy at the county fair or sipping on a milkshake by the beach. I can’t help but to feel happy, warm, and comforted every time I wear it." — Brooke Knappenberger, Associate Commerce Editor
"The older I get, the more I embrace my style, which is really about being as comfortable as possible but still sexy. Relaxed sensuality, if you will. I prefer easy-to-style pieces that have simple silhouettes and muted colors. I've been on the hunt for a basic maxi skirt for ages, and I'm happy to say that this one from Naked Wardrobe checks all the boxes. I'm very particular about basics, since they are the workhorse of my wardrobe, but I have no complaints about this maxi. I love the fact that it's crafted with natural fibers and features a double-lined fabric. Plus, it's actually long enough to fit my 5'8'' frame. I can't wait to reach for it again and again this fall." — Brittany Holloway-Brown, Digital Art Director
"September silhoutes are all about the cinched waist and exaggerated hourglass shape, so this piece from Aureum is at the top of my shopping list. I love a less-is-more approach to accessories and the polished leather of this belt keeps it classic while the slightly chunky, jewelry-inspired gold buckle adds just a touch of drama to elevate any fall 'fit. " — Neha Prakash, Entertainment Director
"If you don’t know, now you know—this Honey Girl Organics Night Creme is the cure for dry skin. When the weather begins to transition, my skin gets dehydrated (which ultimately causes large pores and a textured appearance). After cleansing my face, I look forward to applying this product as it works to moisturize and repair. I don't mind splurging on this cream because it's filled with organic ingredients and it has a smooth consistency (it literally feels like butter melting into my skin). So, if you’re searching for a product that heals dry skin, look no further." — Ashlyn Delaney, Associate Social Editor
"My fashion MO for September is to extend summer's easy, laidback, not-a-care-in-the-world way of dressing for as long as I can. I've only worn it once so far, but I already know that CLYQUE's Kyla Tank will play a big role in expending as little fashion energy as possible throughout early fall. It's made from a modal-spandex blend, making it breathable and stretchy. But my favorite aspect is the cut—the high neckline offers a more polished, dressed-up effect than your standard tank top, and the arm holes are high enough that I can wear the top into the office without worrying my bra might peek through." — Emma Childs, Fashion Features Editor
"With Fashion Month on the horizon, I’m preparing my wardrobe accordingly. I’ve got most of my outfits planned, but what’s missing is a bag that will keep up with my busy schedule. While heading from one show to the next, I’ll need a trusty tote that's large enough for all my on-the-go belongings (including my laptop, my must-have cosmetics, and an extra pair of ballet flats). With that in mind, I decided to add Cuyana’s Classic Easy Leather Tote to my shopping cart. This best-seller features a width of 15 inches, sturdy shoulder straps, and an interior wall pocket for extra storage. Plus, its sumptuous leather exterior is hard to resist." — Lauren Tappan, Fashion Editor
"Fall and loafers go hand in hand, and I love the ruched detailing on this new style from J.Crew. I'll wear them with a great pair of trousers and a blazer on repeat, but they look equally chic alongside a midi-skirt or dress and a pair of really fine rib-knit socks." — Sara Holzman, Fashion Director
