With close to 20 years in the fashion industry, I’ve not only seen it all—but also know how to parse through the endless sea of stuff. What’s worth buying? What’s not? In Self Checkout, you’ll find my highly specific recommendations with a few picks from my most knowledgeable, stylish friends.

Spring is creeping in (my allergies acting up are all the proof I need), which means it’s time to shed those heavy layers. But if you’re not ready to hop into open-toe shoes just yet—or you live in a big city and understand walking around in flimsy flip flops is kind of gross—don’t worry. This week, I’m sharing a few types of shoes that help me bridge the gap between now and proper warm-weather territory.

Huarache and Fisherman Sandals

These are the best of both worlds! Like indoor/outdoor vibes, but for your feet. (Sorry, open-and close-toe vibes just doesn’t have the same ring to it, ya know?)

Loafers and Boat Shoes

If your inner prep is calling to be unleashed, start here. You can wear these with a baggier jean or barrel-leg pant now, then shorts once it really heats up.

Ballet Flats and Mary Janes

In case you missed it, capris are making a comeback. While I won’t be participating in the trend on this go-round, I found the cutest flats to wear with capris for anyone who is.

Low Profile Sneakers

This is the kind of shoe I turn to the most between seasons—especially if it’s raining outside. I hate the idea of cold, wet feet after a surprise rainstorm, and these are great protection.
