30 Elevated Summer Basics Ruling the Last Days of Nordstrom's Half-Yearly Sale
Your wardrobe will thank you.
If you’re a shopping enthusiast like myself, chances are you’re familiar with the Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale. If not, let me inform you about one of the most epic shopping events of the year. On a bi-annual basis, Nordstrom showcases many jaw-dropping deals across thousands of products. The sale includes all of the retailer’s major categories, including my favorite topic as a style editor— fashion, of course.
From now until Sunday, June 2, you can save up to 50 percent off a range of clothes and accessories from brands like Madewell, Open Edit, and Good American. You won’t find just any ordinary sale finds, though—hidden within Nordstrom's Half-Yearly sale, you’ll discover a variety of elevated summer basics that your wardrobe can’t live without. A gauzy white dress that you’ll want to wear all summer long? Check. A pair of comfortable sandals you can slide into for practically any warm-weather occasion? Yep. A timeless one-piece that will serve as the foundation of your swimwear collection? They've got that too.
Although you have over a week to peruse these deals, I recommend acting quickly. The most coveted items notoriously sell out within the first few days of the sale. So, for the sake of time, I’ve curated a list of the 20 most stylish summer staples that will easily become your favorite closet mainstays.
I have a number of casual white dresses hanging in my closet, but I’m specifically looking for one that’s a bit more formal (I’ve got a bunch of engagement parties and celebratory dinners lined up on my summer schedule). As soon as I saw BP.’s white maxi dress, I instantly knew this piece would fit the bill. Covered in delicate lace and designed with a simple silhouette, this dress has an undeniably elegant feel.
For those who don’t know, the fashion crowd’s obsession with ballet flats is still going strong. That said, you’ll likely see these dainty shoes everywhere this summer. Try this trend with Marc Fisher LTD’s Espina Mary Janes, which are offered in a super versatile shade of beige.
CeCe’s smocked top gives the typical white T-shirt an upgrade with tiered sleeves, a jewel neck, and a soft silky texture. Style this flirty top with a pair of white denim bottoms, espadrilles, and a woven bag for a light and airy summer look.
Few garments can surpass the versatility of a white button-down shirt. And for that very reason, I’ll be adding Treasure & Bond’s cotton top to my shopping list. I plan to wear this crisp shirt on repeat this summer—specifically with a pair of white linen pants. There’s something about a monochromatic look that screams sophistication.
If you commute into the office several times a week, chances are you’ll need a reliable rotation of refined outfits. Consider Topshop’s straight leg tailored trousers, which feature a slightly pleated design below the waist and a flattering hem that pools around the ankle.
Looking to balance comfort and style? Slip into Madewell’s black maxi dress which is cut from a stretchy cotton-knit fabric that’s ultra cozy. Plus, this piece is crafted from breathable cotton, so you won’t have to worry about overheating on a sizzling sunny day.
Sam Edelman officially mastered the art of hybrid styles by creating this ultramodern blend between a loafer and an espadrille. The leather upper provides a classy appeal, while the braided jute trim along the sole infuses this shoe with a summery spirit.
Slip skirts have returned for another spin through the trend cycles, but are we really that surprised? Several brands like Givenchy, Carolina Herrera, and Etro showcased this ‘90s-inspired style during the Spring 2024 fashion week circuit just a few months ago. But don’t fret, you don’t have to pay designer prices to get the look. Go retro with BP.’s maxi slip, which is only $28.
Although jeans have a casual reputation, there are certainly elevated denim styles. Exhibit A: Good American’s slim jeans flaunt a saturated indigo hue and a classic shape.
Dolce Vita's strappy sandals are for those who love heels but despise the feeling of sky-high platforms. Made with two-inch heels, an adjustable slingback strap, and a smooth leather upper, these shoes were designed for all-day comfort.
There’s nothing wrong with a trendy bikini, but if you’d prefer more coverage, opt for a one-piece instead. Topshop's version includes eye-catching elements like a halter neck and playful cutouts.
Alongside your trusty beach bag, you’ll need an everyday purse to tote around this summer. I love Kate Spade's leather crossbody bag if you want to give your warm-weather outfits a luxe touch.
If there’s one rule that stands out in my style book, it’s that less is more. I always appreciate a look that requires minimal effort, which is why I’ll be wearing BP.’s satin midi dress all summer long. Whether I’m heading to a cocktail bar or a picnic in the park, all I plan to do is throw on this slinky number with a pair of heels and I’ll be good to go.
Last summer, I discovered the best-elevated outfit formula for balmy weather: A blue-and-white button-down top, a white tank, and a pair of linen shorts. I wore this look practically every week with no regrets, and I plan to do the same this summer. This time around, I’ll style the look with Treasure & Bond's oversized poplin shirt.
Apologies in advance if you’ve heard me talk about the butter yellow trend already, but I can’t help it. This cheerful pastel hue is taking over this summer, and I’ll be taking part in the fun with Franco Sarto's square-toe slide sandals.
One of the easiest ways to boost your summer wardrobe is through tailored separates. Try out Rag & bone’s Marianne pants, which have a slightly oversized fit with cuffed hems. Layer your look with a matching blazer if temperatures take a slight dip.
If you’re not afraid to lean into preppy styles, add a tweed mini skirt to your collection of summer basics. Pair it with a structured T-shirt and loafers to really amp up the school girl aesthetic.
Pleated skirts are often praised as wardrobe essentials, but pleated shirts deserve just as much attention too. WAYF’s stunning shell top is bound to add a sense of dimension to any outfit.
Transition your seaside outfit beyond the shore with a stylish cover-up that can easily cosplay as a cute summer dress. This breezy piece from Topshop has a roomy construction, so you’ll remain nice and cool throughout the day.
Pair Open Edit’s sleeveless corset-inspired top with flowy trousers, kitten heels, and a luxe handbag to create the perfect going-out outfit.
Several months ago, Marie Claire reported that mesh footwear would become a major shoe trend for Spring 2024. Not only did this barely-there style rule the spring season, but it will continue to flourish through summer. Dive into the trend with these pretty ballet flats from Loeffler Randall.
As someone who wears tailored trousers practically every day during the week, I’ve become a pro at shopping for the best options on the market. l tend to steer clear of slim and constricting silhouettes, and Open Edit’s wide-leg pants rank high on my wishlist for their comfort.
Open Edit's racerback tank is the perfect length for tucking into a pair of baggy jeans or cargo pants for a casual summer outing.
Your closet of summer basics isn't complete without a pair of linen shorts. Linen pants with thigh-grazing hems offer a great way to beat the heat during warmer months.
We've been seeing prairie dresses everywhere recently. The puffed sleeves and billowy body of this dress from ASTR the Label make me want to try the look for myself.
Sneakers are inherently laid-back, but that doesn’t mean they can't be elevated. Take Sam Edelman’s Luann sneakers, which feature a sleek shape, a clean beige shade, and suede overlays.
Alongside breathable cardigans and light denim jackets, a breezy blazer is also a great summer layering piece. Prepare yourself for temperature dips with Open Edit’s relaxed fit blazer.
If you’re heading to the shore this summer, remember to wear great cropped linen pants. They're great as a swimsuit coverup as you transition from a fun day at the beach to a casual coastal dinner.
Cardigans are convenient summertime layers that can also shield you from the breeze of blasting air conditioners. Whether you’re lounging on the couch or sitting at your office desk, Open Edit's snug cardigan is a great lightweight styling piece.
To all the sneakerheads out there, this one's for you. Converse's Chuck Taylor shoes have been marked down from $65 to $46—an impressive 30 percent reduction. If you need to refresh your lineup of everyday sneakers, look no further.
