Very rarely am I caught not wearing a pair of cool white sneakers. I have plenty of boots and flats in my collection, but sneakers will always be my go-to if I’m rushing to get out the door. And while the year’s biggest sneaker trends come and go, I know having a failsafe pair of white sneakers in my collection (or even several) is essential.

No longer banished to morning commutes or confined to our weekly trips to the gym, white sneakers have cemented themselves as a cool, fashionable, and reliable wardrobe essential. They've become mainstays in the closets of street style stars, and every celebrity—including Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber, and Kendall Jenner—each has their favorite brands or silhouettes that they return to in a near-constant rotation. The classic white Adidas Samba is one of those—and one of Jenner's longtime favorites—remaining a seasonless It-sneaker since it hit the scene in 2022. It's still rare to find a white pair in stock more than two years later. More recently, white sneakers from retro brands like Vans have become an unlikely staple, too.

Even for non-A-listers, a fresh pair of white work sneakers has become a commonplace choice off-duty and in offices as dress codes are shifting and as major brands have been releasing spurge-worthy designer sneaker options in steady succession. "White sneakers are the ultimate wardrobe staple because they can be dressed up or down and worn to a multitude of occasions, which is the key to finding a near-perfect pair," echoes Kendall Becker, fashion and beauty trends editor at Trendalytics. Even if you’re not into slender pairs similar to the Sambas, plenty of white chunky sneakers on the market—outfitted with platforms and sporty 3D detailing—are bound to suit your fancy.

Ahead, Marie Claire spoke to experts like Becker and celebrity wardrobe stylist Ariel Tunnell—about what they look for when shopping for their own white sneakers, the brands to keep an eye out for, and what styles will be the rising stars of 2024. I also tapped a few sneaker-obsessed members of Team Marie Claire to share their favorites. Keep scrolling to see all of the best white sneakers on the market right now.

What To Look for in the Best White Sneakers

  • Material: White sneakers come in just about every material, but some of the most popular options on the market include leather, canvas, or suede. Each material should be treated differently, and Becker recommends options made from leather or canvas because they tend to be easier to clean. Leather sneakers can also look more elevated for various situations and events.
  • Versatility: Speaking of elevated sneakers, the most versatile styles should be able to be dressed up or down. Many of the options on this list fit this description. Slimmer silhouettes and neutral colorways—which Becker points to as two trends in the space right now—are going to work harder in your collection. "I’m happy to see some of the bulky dad sneakers are being swapped for cleaner, more minimal shapes," echoes Tunnell.
  • Size Range: My feet are slightly different sizes (which is surprisingly common!), so I need to find a pair of sneakers that come in half sizes for the perfect fit. The good news is that most of the sneakers on this list do. Other sizing details to look out for are the shoe's width and whether your preferred pair runs true to size. Some of the sneakers on this list are designed to fit wider—the slip-on sneakers from Vans are a great example—while Isabel Marant's Beth Sneakers tend to be more narrow.
  • Comfort: If you're investing money in a new pair of white sneakers, you will want to wear them often. Look for picks that don't have a break-in period or are outfitted with padded insoles, as these features tend to make a shoe feel better on your feet after hours of wear.

How To Keep Your White Sneakers Clean

"Nothing looks crispier than a fresh white pair of kicks," says Tunnell. But there is often nothing harder than keeping your new pair of sneakers looking crisp and clean. That's why figuring out how to clean your white sneakers as soon as you buy them is important. Life happens, and they're bound to get dirty after a few wears. Every fabric has its own cleaning specifications; some are easier to clean than others. There are a few broad-stroke guidelines to keep in mind, though:

  • Act Fast: Stains are less likely to last if you take care of them as soon as possible. Scuffs, dirt, and mud stains can be buffed out with a washcloth. However, letting such stains sit on your sneakers for too long can lead to permanent damage.
  • Read the Care Label: The internet seemingly has thousands of at-home remedies for removing marks and stains from your white sneakers, but don't apply anything to your kicks without reading the care label. There is no worse feeling than thinking you're treating a stain with a specific product and making the original mark look worse in the process.
  • Never Tumble-Dry Your Sneakers: Throwing your fabric sneakers in the washing machine can be a quick and easy way to remove stains, but I recommend air-drying them. Yes, it will take longer, but using the dryer on your shoes can damage luxurious materials like leather.
  • Consult a Professional: Some stains require an expert opinion, and no household cleaner can remedy them. In such cases, go to a cobbler you trust.

How to Style White Sneakers

White sneakers are made to be versatile, but there are a few editor-approved styling tricks to keep in mind. If you opt for running shoes, lean into athleisure the celebrity way: with black leggings, bunched-up socks, and a transitional jacket. Or, try wearing an all-white outfit (even after Labor Day) with your sneakers for a fresh and clean look. Dark accessories like Gigi Hadid’s black sunglasses help it feel cool and not too matchy-matchy. Or, wear your white sneakers as Kendall Jenner did instead of a pair of ballet flats with a maxi skirt and a tank top. This could easily be warmed up for the upcoming fall season with a lightweight sweater.
