Not to toot my own horn, but I’ve become quite an expert in cocktail attire—and I owe it all to my job as a fashion editor. Although I spend much of my day fervently typing away at my computer, my nights are often filled with upscale brand events that call for a refined dress code that's a bit more casual than rigid black-tie attire. I’ve become a pro at swapping my office-friendly work uniforms for rich-looking outfits that flaunt a more formal flair.

As for my cocktail attire rulebook, I like to stick to a few general practices. First and foremost, I’ve learned that elevated pieces like lavish dresses, satin slip skirts, and chic blouses always fare well. Even tailored trousers can fit the bill, depending on how you style them (more on that below). As for layers, sharp blazers, structured wool coats, and sleek trench coats are perfectly suitable. And, of course, I can’t chat about cocktail attire without mentioning accessories (a.k.a. the icing on the cake). Gleaming pieces of jewelry, dainty pairs of heels, and glossy handbags that embody elegance are an absolute must.

And if you’re wondering what not to wear, lean in closely and listen up. Although this might go without saying, I will shout it anyway: Leave your laid-back jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers at home! You can save those pieces for any other casual occasion.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, it’s time to get to the fun part. Ahead, I’ve curated a list of 10 glamorous looks that will help you traverse the tricky terrain of cocktail attire. Whether you’re looking for a holiday party outfit or need a wedding guest uniform, these looks will have you covered for any sophisticated soirée.

Heading to a cocktail party after a day in the office? Choose an outfit that can work a double shift, like this luxe getup. Add a neutral-toned blazer, a simple blouse, and a slinky slip skirt.

Trousers for the Win

Yes, pants can fall into the cocktail attire category.

Although jeans and cargo pants are off limits when it comes to dressing for a high-end event, tailored trousers are perfectly acceptable. Just make sure to enhance your look with polished separates and glossy accessories that boast a quiet luxury appeal.

The Trusty Little Black Dress

Any style expert will tell you that an LBD is the cocktail attire MVP.

When in doubt, slip on a little black dress. It’s a timeless style that will never let you down, and its hallmark feature is that it’s extremely versatile. Dress yours up any way you’d like, but I’d recommend including tights and bow-adorned mules into the mix.

It’s Not Complicated

Keep it simple with a turtleneck frock and embellishments to match.

I’m a firm believer that the best cocktail outfits are the ones that don’t require a ton of effort to assemble. Take this regal look, for example, which only involves three basic elements.

That’s Rich!

While dressing for a special occasion, remember that fabric choice is paramount. In addition to incorporating sumptuous silk into your wardrobe, consider other expensive-looking materials like plush velvet. Slip into this outfit and you’ll immediately radiate wealth.

Red All Over

There’s something about shades of red that feel undeniably classy.

Many will say that a rotation of cocktail outfits isn’t complete without a black dress, and although this is totally true, I’d argue that a red dress also ranks high on the list of must-haves. For those moments when you’re looking to make a splash with color, you’ll want to reach for this ensemble.

Bedazzled and Bejeweled

Spice up your all-black outfit with a dress trimmed in radiant rhinestones. And if you’re really feeling fancy, follow a maximalist style memo with glistening jewelry and a striking silver handbag.

The Bolder, the Better

Embrace a fierce look by way of a dramatic fur-lined layer.

Channel your inner mob wife with a faux fur maxi coat. Walk into any room with this bold layer, and you might be mistaken for the one and only Carmela Soprano.

Make a Statement

Pull on a dramatic tulle dress, and they’ll have no choice but to stop and stare.

If you’re heading to an extra lavish event, level up your look with an elaborate tulle frock that errs on the black-tie end of the spectrum. Since this dress is the main attraction here, keep the rest of your look relatively pared-down.
