The Unexpected Celebrity Fashion Trends You’re Going To See Everywhere This Fall

Rihanna, Katie Holmes, and Hailey Bieber are helping usher in the newest styles that are anything but boring.

A celebrity endorsement is a powerful thing. An A-lister’s approval can sway you to buy a certain brand of cereal or splurge on a new scent you haven’t even tested yet. If the star belongs in the coveted cohort of style iconsRihanna! Zendaya! Beyoncé!you could feel compelled even to try a fashion trend far out of your comfort zone. And with the fall 2024 trends celebrities are endorsing, that very well may be the case.

The silhouettes and aesthetics cherry-picked for the coming season by today’s celebs may not resonate at first glance (two words: naked shoes). But because of how these celebrity-approved fall trends are styled, whether by the stars themselves or a talented stylist, they feel far less intimidating. Take Jennifer Lopez, for instance. A documented fan of see-through stilettos, Lopez recently wore a pair of PVC pumps that revealed her glazed donut pedicure but tamed them down with regular blue jeans and a humble white T-shirt. See? Altogether, her foot-forward take on naked dressing doesn’t feel as far out of a fashion choice anymore.

And Lopez isn’t alone; all the key style soothsayers have recently co-signed their fair share of unexpected fall trends, from Miss Minimalist-With-a-Twist Hailey Bieber wearing yoga pants with a leather jacket to Katie Holmes’s wearing the widest of wide-leg pants.

The Controversial—Yet Cute—Mesh Flat

Love it or loathe it, fashion's mesh momentum isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Anne Hathaway styles her best mesh flats with pajamas and a Birkin bag—an outfit that epitomizes a high-low fashion format. Zendaya styles her mesh flats by Bottega Veneta with tank tops, front-pleat pants, as well as boxer shorts, and a take on the tailored vest trend. And then, of course, there's Jennifer Lawrence, who's rarely seen without The Row's $900 netted jelly sandals on her feet.

The Sports Fan Apparel

Summer 2024 ushered in an athletic shorts trend, which saw the street style set walking around New York City's sidewalks and attending industry events in baggy basketball shorts. According to Rihanna, the sporty style momentum (TikTok calls it the "blokette trend") will surely continue for fall but pivot away from the open-legged bottoms to the top half instead. The Fenty founder recently wore a slouchy blue Scott Racing Team jersey with camo cargo pants and a Gucci tote, a trending tour de force of an outfit.

The Bigger the Blazer, the Better

Oversized blazers have been trending for several seasons now. But what makes recent celebrity interpretations so fascinating is they've transitioned from slightly baggy to two-sizes-too-big. Lopez wore a cutout blazer that surrounded her in white crepe fabric a few weeks ago, a follow-up to a previous look featuring a capacious checked jacket styled with a rare Birkin bag and flare jeans. Other celebrities often use their baggy blazers as coverups: Doja Cat wore hers over a corseted naked dress, while Rihanna teamed hers with an entirely see-through and sheer skirt.

The Big Baggy Jeans

While the list of the fall 2024 denim trends is robust, celebrities seem to only be interested in one: ultra-baggy and exaggerated wide-leg jeans. Holmes is perhaps the biggest proponent of oversized denim: she wears supersized trousers in denim-on-denim-outfits, big barrel jeans, and even embarked on a matchy-matchy mother-daughter baggy jeans moment with Suri Cruise. Other celebrity fans include Zendaya, Rihanna, and Dakota Johnson.

The Cold Weather Linen

Unsurprisingly, linens were a celebrity favorite summer 2024 trend—the easy-breezy material is practically synonymous with the season. The fall fashion forecast shows that a simplistic, laidback approach to dressing will prevail, which means the odds are very high that linen will trickle into the coming season, too. Take it from Lopez, whose linen pants resembled an autumnal wool blend, Meghan Markle’s Ralph Lauren linen shirt, and the ever-experimental Julia Fox, who wore the dress of the season: the white $158 Gap shirtdress initially worn by Hathaway.

The 'It' Color: Butter Yellow

Fashion had already decided on the fall 2024 color trends last spring when designers debuted their seasonal collections. Creamy, soft yellow was not one of those standout shades—but in the months since celebrities have boosted it to a new status. Bieber wore it for her bridal shower (with a matching butter manicure), Holmes is partial to slip dresses and cotton tees in the hue, and Sabrina Carpenter even took it on the red carpet.

The Lingerie-Adjacent Slip Skirt

The trend cycle is fickle and ever-changing. But if there’s one constant you can rely on, particularly among the super-watt stars, it’s that some form of lingerie-inspired dressing will appear every season. For fall 2024, that means boudoir-adjacent slip skirts. Gigi Hadid wore a slip skirt and V-neck sweater, while Kaia Gerber chose an all-black outfit featuring a vintage-inspired midi and dark tank, both combos worth replicating come fall. Kendall Jenner is a fan, too: recently, Jenner wore a gold slip skirt from The Row with a plain black tee, which encapsulated her less-is-more fashion M.O.

Dressed-Up Athleisure

Feel free to take this as a sign from the A-listers above to wear your best leggings and work sneakers wherever you go: taking your workout gear and loungewear out and about is cool now. Bieber teams yoga pants with a leather jacket and kitten heels, while Tracee Ellis Ross dresses up her all-white sweatpants with a Loewe bag and a sharp double-breasted blazer. Relatable fashion icon Holmes is a fan, too: the actress recently wore gray sweats, an open button-down shirt, the fisherman sandals trend, and a Khaite bag in an outfit that’s likely pretty close to what you wear on a last-minute, late-night snack run to the grocery store.
