The Teddy Coat Trend Is Still Fashion's Favorite Outerwear Style

These plush layers are better than a blanket.

On mornings so cold that my bones almost start to shiver, I wrap myself in the furriest, hardest-working outerwear I own: my best teddy coat. This style offers more polish than a puffer jacket but is less formal than a tailored coat. Like the emerging yeti coat trend, it offers heavy-duty hugs in wearable form.

First introduced by Max Mara on the 2013 runways, this trendy coat style has remained an enduring favorite among the It-girl crowd. Lily Collins recently wore the Italian label’s beloved Teddy Bear Icon Coat alongside suede Adidas Samba sneakers, baggy sweatpants, and a fitted baseball cap. Rihanna and Hailey Bieber have worn other versions of designer teddy coats, opting for styles in trending shades of butter yellow and chocolate brown.

What everyone loves most about teddy coats is their well-rounded versatility. A textured teddy pairs well with my bodega-run uniform (leggings, a sweater, and whatever pair of sneakers are within reach) and a winter work outfit. In addition to their limitless styling potential, you can absolutely find a teddy coat with the details and price point that best suits you. Madewell offers floor-sweeping coats that hit right below the knee, while Everlane has shorter versions with more lightweight construction, which is great for transitional weather.

My favorite is a faux fur coat by Banana Republic cut in a cropped silhouette. I recently coordinated it with a little black dress and gold jewelry to emulate the Mob Wife to end all Mob Wives, Carmela Soprano.

They might tick all the "trendy" boxes, but more than anything, the best teddy coats are reliable wardrobe staples. Ahead, shop 20 options that are as warm as they are stylish.

Long Teddy Coats

Embrace a timeless look by styling your teddy coat with an all-black outfit.

Long teddy coats are as classic as they come. Often designed with spread collars and a buttoned closure along the front, this sophisticated style is anchored and quite luxury-coded. I recommend investing in neutral hues that can easily cycle through your rotation of outfits. The refined options ahead will fit the bill.

Short Teddy Coats

Not looking to drown your outfit in a floor-sweeping coat? Consider a cropped alternative instead.

If you don't want to cover your tailored trousers or straight-leg jeans, a teddy coat with a shortened hemline will offer coverage but won't overpower the outfit underneath. Luxe coats with Sherpa and shearling offer an elevated touch to take any outfit up a notch.

Belted Teddy Coats

It doesn’t get much cozier than a robe-like belted teddy.

For those moments when you want to prioritize comfort, bundle up in a belted teddy coat that’ll make you feel as though you’re wearing a luxurious bathrobe. Before you leave the house, ditch your fuzzy slippers for a pair of sharp high-knee boots.

Teddy Jackets

Non-bulky teddy jackets are ideal for temperatures that fall between the extremes.

If you’re in need of a lightweight layer, pull on a teddy jacket. This short-length style flaunts the same lavish appeal as a hefty teddy coat, but it provides a bit less coverage (which will come in handy during balmy winter days).

Hooded Teddy Coats

This type of teddy is so warm, it might rival your favorite coat.

Top off your cold-weather athleisure outfits with a hooded teddy coat. This snug style is more refined than a casual hoodie but still has a laid-back edge. For your next errand run, team a hooded teddy beside a crewneck sweater, a pair of yoga pants, and trendy white sneakers.
