Holidays In the Sun: What We're Wearing on Our Summer Escapes
Finally, time for a change of scenery and change of costume!
While many of us are approaching this summer with expectations of a social explosion fueled by a renewed sense of freedom, others are dipping a toe into a more narrowed version of the outside world. For either party, restorative travel provides an opportunity for a much-needed change of environment and in some cases, a change of personal perspective as we embrace our post-pandemic forms.
Expression through fashion and beauty is a way to harness these changes, even if we can’t fully remember how to get dressed in the first place. Think of travel dressing as training wheels to experiment with a specifically-edited wardrobe and beauty looks that may not be a part of your everyday world. Take a cue from our summer fashion story, shot along the southern coast of Portugal, near the city of Faro, where the environment drove the inspiration behind each look, leaving our athleisure safety nets thousands of miles away.
In this world, a tweed coat woven with sunset-inspired hues is paired with unexpected cobalt blue dashed across the eyelids and the same pop of color on the shoes. A graphic knit dress coordinates with a kitchen interior and a sunny yellow beach umbrella matches a monochromatic beach outfit. It’s exciting but not outrageous fashion, full of spirit and optimism. While color is an easy shot of energy after our closets and passports have remained dormant, we can’t ignore the quietness that exploration—both internal and external—can bring. Self-care has become even more important: Physically, the body craves sunshine and it’s our duty to protect it during our travels, with sun care, scrubs, and hydration to balance all of that exposure. Mentally, journaling and basking in the senses help us find peace and inspiration. Trying out a new fragrance to commemorate your first trip somewhere new can help lock it in your memory.
No matter the process, take it all in and hope we never take travel for granted again. Wherever your journey may bring you this summer, let fashion and beauty be the tools to help reinvent or reacquaint yourself with the world outside and in.
