Spring’s Skirt Suit Trend Isn’t Just for Corporate Girls

As a child of the ‘90s, I vividly remember my mom’s impressive collection of skirt suits. These included prescriptive pencil skirts with their signature knee-length hem and matching structured blazers with exaggerated shoulder pads. Today's skirt suits, while definitely inspired by their heyday, have been revived for a new modern era and for the slew of cool It-girls that are making them a bonafide trend for spring 2025.

Supermodel Kendall Jenner has been an early adopter. In August 2024, she wore a matching set with a linen blazer and a coordinating mini skirt to the Paris Olympics. In September 2024, she swapped it for a navy blue version. This January, she donned one yet again at Schiaparelli's spring 2025 couture show, this time in a ladylike dark gray wool silhouette channeling Jackie Kennedy's style. She accessorized with leather gloves and backless mules.

Meanwhile, fellow A-listers like Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicole Richie have also co-signed the look over the last few months. Taylor-Joy picked a gray plaid mini variation, and Richie chose a maximalist leopard print fur coat and a matching skirt. Their three very different styling sensibilities prove the skirt suit’s innate versatility.

While a celeb is a great ambassador for skirt suits, the two-piece set is also an accessible trend for the everyday person. It was a popular sighting at New York Fashion Week, where showgoers played with hemlines and textures to create looks that toed the line between corporate core and everyday wear.

We've rounded up the best, easiest-to-copy skirt suit looks you can experiment with over the next few months. These work asgreat in-office outfits, but you could just as easily pair the top or the bottom as separates for an off-duty take.

Play with texture by swapping in a classic wool pencil skirt for one made from an edgier fabric like leather or suede. The key to keeping the look cohesive is to use the same color to create a monochromatic effect.

Think of these plaid iterations as grown-up versions of Cher's suits from Clueless. Either piece can easily be made to look more formal in a neutral plaid hue instead of the bold yellow shade from the film.

Vest in Class

Vests offer a slightly sexier take compared to your favorite blazer.

Swap a blazer for a trendy tailored vest to revitalize the matchy-matchy ensemble. In spring, you can layer it over a button-down shirt or wear it on its own.

Head-To-Toe Tan

Opting for a light brown shade gives your suit longevity as we head into warmer weather. With the new season in mind, eschew a jacket for a coordinating button-down top with an exaggerated shape.

All-Over Leather

For an edgy look, choose unexpected fabrics, like all-over leather. Not all suits require an office-ready blazer, so opt for a cropped leather jacket silhouette to keep the look fresh.
