Dressing doesn't always have to be so serious—just ask Elsbeth Tascioni, the main character in CBS' hit TV show, Elsbeth. America's favorite quirky lawyer is back for season two, and she's winning legal cases and serving fashion looks. From vibrant colors to unexpected accessories, Elsbeth's wardrobe is the epitome of dressing for your personality. Behind these unforgettable looks is Elsbeth costume designer, Dan Lawson, who has expertly crafted a wardrobe that reflects the main character's unique vibe. Whether it's her fearless use of color, her love for mixing prints, or her expertise in layering (there are always three pieces on her at a time, minimum), Elsbeth's style is a powerful tool for self-expression. As we approach the new season, which premieres on Thursday, October 17, take note of these five style lessons you can start incorporating into your own wardrobe.
Express Yourself Through Your Wardrobe
Elsbeth Tascioni is a character who wears her heart on her sleeve. Whether it's her signature pink looks or more playful patterns, her wardrobe is an extension of her personality. "Elsbeth's childlike wonder and awe of New York City is reflected in her wardrobe through the use of bright colors (especially Elsbeth's favorite color pink), juxtaposed patterns, glitter, and sparkle," says Lawson. The takeaway? Never be afraid to show your true self through your personal style. Whether you're quirky, classic, or somewhere in between, let your wardrobe become a canvas for your personality.
Don't Be Afraid of Color
You will never find Elsbeth in a look without color, and it always works for her. Bold, vibrant hues are a staple in her closet, and they're used to draw attention to her in every scene. "Walking into her closet makes me happy—it's full of pinks, oranges, reds, and purples. It's so optimistic," shares Lawson. He explains that he knows how to match her mood and the moment, toning down the hues when necessary, but never shying away from adding a splash of something bright. Color isn't just an afterthought—it's a statement. So go ahead and add that bright pink blazer to your cart. Elsbeth would approve.
Mix and Match Prints and Patterns
I've always been too intimidated to mix patterns, but Elsbeth has inspired me tremendously. Her wardrobe is such a fun combination of prints and patterns that should clash but somehow work together perfectly. She can pair polka dots with stripes or plaids with checks and it all looks effortless. The key to mastering this? Confidence. "She marches to [the beat of] her own drum and is heartened by her unique style," Lawson notes. Sometimes the most unexpected pairings are the most stunning, especially when you own your style.
Experiment with Accessories
When it comes to accessories, Elsbeth doesn't hold back. From giant fuzzy bucket hats to extravagant bows, her accessories add a distinct flair to her outfits. "I have really fallen in love with using pins of all kinds this season—crocheted fruits and flowers, vintage plastic and rhinestone flowers, geometric shapes," says the costume designer. Elsbeth's accessories aren't just add-ons; they're essential to her look. Don't underestimate the power of a good accessory. It's the cherry on top that can transform an ordinary outfit into an extraordinary one.
Layering Is Key
Elsbeth's love for outerwear is undeniable, and she's a pro at layering. But layering isn't just about piling on clothes—it's about balance. Lawson swears by the rule: Don't be too bulky and don't be too busy. "I try to let one item be the star of her look and [let] the other pieces [be] the supporting players," the designer explains. "If Elsbeth has a bright and busy suit jacket, I might use a calmer-toned jacket, but maybe it will have an interesting [and] unexpected texture."
This fall, discover Elsbeth's unique fashion choices as she teams up with the NYPD to track down the city's most well-heeled murderers. Don't miss the new season of Elsbeth, premiering Thursday, October 17 at 10/9c on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
