I will admit: I am a perfume snob. Actually, I’m a body care snob in general. Not only do I expect luxurious, sensorially elegant formulas, but I also expect them to smell phenomenal too. That being said, any fragrance lover knows that you can’t just mix and match any ‘ole scents together. Unless you use only products from one brand, there’s no real way to ensure your fragranced picks are truly cohesive. If you find layering tedious (although I do recommend figuring out your olfactive personality), allow me to introduce my favorite single note, which I firmly believe pairs well with anything: Ambroxan.

“Ambroxan is one of the best-smelling ambergris ingredients there is,” Geza Schoen, perfumer and founder of Escentric Molecule, tells me. “It’s a synthetic replacement for that legendary waxy substance a sperm whale expels into the ocean, which only develops its extraordinary scent after months or years drifting in saltwater and sun. Real ambergris is rare and absurdly expensive, so Ambroxan is the recreation of this molecule in the lab.”

The magic of the note is in its shape-shifting abilities, which make ambroxan perfumes a fantastic addition to any scenting routine, regardless of where your preferences typically lie on the olfactive chart. “What makes Ambroxan so special is its ability to be both present and discreet at the same time,” Sergio Momo, Founder & CEO of Xerjoff, tells me. “It can create a soft, almost skin-like aura around a fragrance without ever dominating the composition. At the same time, its exceptional persistence and longevity can give a fragrance a distinctive, contemporary, and sophisticated signature.”

I’m not kidding when I say Ambroxan is one of my favorite perfume notes, and to be honest, I think I’ve collected almost every Ambroxan fragrance on the market. Of course, this means that I’ve tested them all, and as usual, I have notes to share. If you’re on the hunt for your own Ambroxan perfumes, want to learn how to layer with the note, or simply prefer a more minimalist fragrance, the picks below will be a fantastic addition to your fragrance collection and routine.

    The Best Ambroxan Perfumes

    • Best Overall Ambroxan Perfume: Escentric Molecules Molecule 02
    • Best Masculine Ambroxan Perfume: Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum
    • Best Aquatic Ambroxan Perfume: Liquides Imaginaires Fleur de Sable Eau de Parfum
    • Best Niche Ambroxan Perfume: Xerjoff Alexandria II Parfum
    • Best Skin Scent Ambroxan Perfume: Fugazzi Angel Dust Eau de Parfum
    • Best Fresh Ambroxan Perfume: Louis Vuitton Imagination Eau de Parfum
    • Best Classic Ambroxan Perfume: Another 13 Eau de Parfum
    • Best Ambroxan Home Fragrance: Ambroxyde 17 Home Fragrance

    Best Overall Ambroxan Perfume

    Molecule 02 - 30ml

    Escentric Molecules
    Molecule 02
    $85
    SHOP NOW

Escentric Molecules is one of my favorite fragrance brands, and if you’re a fragrance minimalist, I can almost guarantee it’ll be yours too. Molecule 02 is made up entirely of a single Ambroxan note, which makes it one of my favorite perfumes to layer with when I want to add that skin-like airiness that the note is known for to my scent of the day. It can also be worn on its own for a more intimate, skin-scent vibe.

Review: “I have both, molecule 1 and 2, and both perfumes are my absolute faves! This perfume has a unique smell; it has one ingredient, ambroxan, an amber, musky, clean scent. Because it’s a one-note scent, it’s very light and ideal when you are sensitive to fragrances because of headaches. It feels very soft and sensual when I wear it.” — Bloomingdale's

    Best Masculine Ambroxan Perfume

Eau De Parfum Spray, 3.4 Oz

    Chanel
    Eau De Parfum Spray
    $135
    SHOP NOW

Is Bleu de Chanel technically marketed as a men’s fragrance? Yes. Do I care? No. This storied scent has long been touted for a delicious amber accord, which, after some research, I found is partly made up of ambroxan. It’s likely what continues to draw me back to the perfume, alongside the deliciously woody, slightly masculine vibe that hits especially hard when I want to feel cool and mysterious.

Review: “Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum is a sophisticated, versatile fragrance that works year-round. It opens with fresh citrus and grapefruit, then develops into warm woods, sandalwood, cedar, and a touch of incense.” — Chanel

    Best Aquatic Ambroxan Perfume

Les Eaux De L'est Fleur De Sable Eau De Parfum, 1.6 Oz.

    Liquides Imaginaires
Les Eaux De L'est Fleur De Sable Eau De Parfum
    $136
    SHOP NOW

Love that watery, aquatic accord in your fragrances? Fleur de Sable features notes of bergamot, water, orris, paprika, and, of course, ambroxan. The result? An airy, slightly citrus aquatic perfume that reveals the ambroxan base note so elegantly that the scent becomes more of an experience than simply an amalgamation of different notes.

Review: “Such a great mysterious scent. I can’t stop sniffing my wrists all day long. It feels like the one(1) accessory when you’re wearing fitted jeans and a crisp shirt. Or a power suit on a Harley. Or the artist closing a million-dollar painting.” — Libertineparfumerie.com

    Best Niche Ambroxan Perfume

    Alexandria Ii Eau De Parfum

    Xerjoff
    Alexandria II Eau De Parfum
    $630
    SHOP NOW

If you’re obsessed with niche perfumes like I am, then you likely know and love the brand Xerjoff. Alexandria II is a gorgeous combination of notes like lavender, apple, lily of the valley, and rose, with an amber base that gives it an extra sultry kick that you won’t be able to get enough of. If you love a beast-mode perfume, pick this one up.

Review: “Intense in a beautiful way. This fragrance is Sophisticated, elegant, not overpowering, with the best sillage and insane longevity. Been wearing this for over a year and I usually keep a backup bottle because we can’t run out of this; it’s unacceptable! I love almost everything from Xerjoff.” — Bloomingdale's

    Best Skin Scent Ambroxan Perfume

Angel Dust Eau De Parfum With Bergamot and Woody Musk

    Fugazzi
    Angel Dust Eau De Parfum
    $175
    SHOP NOW

If you want a skin scent that projects incredibly well, Angel Dust should be on your list. The name of this is one of the most apt perfume descriptors I’ve ever come across. It’s light, airy, and distinctly ethereal, perfect for anyone who just wants to smell good in a way that almost feels like perfect skin.

Review: “This smells amazing! It’s so fresh and clean, I’ve gotten multiple compliments on this since wearing it. Loved it so much I bought the hair mist as well as the dry shampoo. It’s not overly masculine as others stated; it smells like a fresh laundry detergent, honestly. Will continually repurchase this. Not a sickeningly sweet scent.” — Sephora

    Best Fresh Ambroxan Perfume

    Louis Vuitton Imagination

    Louis Vuitton
    Imagination Eau de Parfum
    $510
    SHOP NOW

Want a fresher ambroxan scent with a bit of a tea vibe? Louis Vuitton’s Imagination will satisfy that craving. Bergamot, black tea, amber, and more combine to create the most gorgeous, clean, fresh-smelling amboxan scent. The best part? This is a unisex fragrance that can truly be worn year-round with ease. So if you’re more of a signature scent warrior, this luxury pick may just become your new go-to.

Review: “Imagination is the epitome of a tea fragrance. It feels like the refreshing black tea note is all I pick up on when I do my initial application. However, when it starts to dry down is when you start to get that gorgeous, skin-like minerality that Ambroxan is known for, and the combination of all the delicious fresh notes makes me fall even further in love every time I get a whiff of it. This one’s on the more luxurious end of the spectrum, but in my opinion, it’s more than worth the price.” — Ariel Baker, Beauty Writer

    Best Classic Ambroxan Perfume

    Another 13

    Le Labo
    Another 13
    $250
    SHOP NOW

Another 13 is one of my favorite perfumes of all time, and given its popularity since it launched in 2010, I’d say that it’s become a cult classic in its own right. Fruity notes of apple and pear open the perfume before moss, ambroxan, Iso E. Super, and more make their way to the front of the line for your sniffing pleasure. In short, if I could describe myself as a perfume, it’d be this one.

Review: “I am absolutely in love with Another 13 by Le Labo. It’s one of those scents that feels completely unique yet somehow effortless and addictive. On my skin, it starts off clean and slightly musky, almost like fresh air mixed with soft skin, and then it warms up into this beautiful, subtle woody-amber scent.” — Lucky Scent

    Best Ambroxan Home Fragrance

Le Labo Fragrances Ambroxyde 17 | Home Fragrance

    Le Labo
    Fragrances Ambroxyde 17
    $138
    SHOP NOW

I love when my home smells as good as I do, so when I found out that my favorite Le Labo candle, Ambroxyde 17, comes in a home spray, I had to include it on this list. Think of it as Another 13 but for your home, as it boasts similar ingredients: ambroxide, musks, woods, jasmine, and moss. I’m not telling you to spray this formula on your body. But what I am saying is that it’s cheaper than the eau de parfum. Do what you’d like with those two independent, non-related statements.

Review: “I didn’t even know they came out with this product….My partner surprised me with this candle!!! Smells just like another 13 (my go-to fragrance). I’m in LOVEEEE.” — Mecca

What Are the Best Notes to Pair With Ambroxan?

Ambroxan is one of the best chameleon perfume notes out there, so realistically, you can pair it with anything. However, a few others highlight its unique facets beautifully.

“Ambroxan is endlessly versatile and plays with almost anything,” Schoen says. “My favorite partners are musk, which melts into it to create the ultimate skin scent; cedarwood, which gives it structure and backbone, and iris, for a cool, powdery, genderless elegance.”

Xerjoff also has a few favorite pairings. “Ambroxan adds depth and warmth to citrus and fresh notes, enhances the regal and dry character of woody notes such as sandalwood, cedarwood and vetiver, and when paired with musky notes, creates a very seductive nuance.” In niche perfumery, it’s also not uncommon to pair the note with floral, spicy or gourmand profiles, which XERJOFF says creates an “unexpected yet intriguing contrast between freshness, warmth and texture.”
