Julia Gray
Julia Gray is a contributing fashion writer at Marie Claire, where she covers runway trends, celebrity style, and shopping. In her six years as a journalist, Julia’s reporting has ranged across style, music, Internet culture, art, retail, tech, and more. In addition to Marie Claire, Julia writes for outlets like the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Ringer, New York Magazine, Pitchfork, Nylon, and Vice, among others. Julia's reporting is led by curiosity. She's covered everything from the first-ever Sopranos fan convention to the rise and fall (and rise again?) of the metal straw. Julia is especially interested in stories about Internet communities, fandom, the business of celebrity, the power of pop stars, brand strategy, and Gen Z. Some of her favorite stories include a deep-dive into how Gen Z is reshaping product design, a look into the psychological role music plays in a retail store, an interview with Rebecca Black on viral fame for the tenth anniversary of "Friday," an exploration of how climate change is changing music festivals, an analysis of how gossip can fuel a pop song's success, and a tongue-in-cheek review of The Bachelor's music-themed spin-off (which was used unironically in a pull-quote later in the season). Julia is not only interested in critiquing and covering pop culture, but in understanding what our pop culture says about how we live and modern values. When she’s not writing, Julia hosts a podcast called Girls Room, where she and her co-host revisit shows like Girls and Gossip Girl from the beginning with guests like comedian Cat Cohen and writer Hunter Harris. Girls Room was recently cited in the New York Times.
