An Inclusive "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Reboot Is in the Works

The Scooby Gang is headed back to your TV with a much-needed, inclusive makeover. 20th Century Fox Television, the studio behind the cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has announced plans to reboot the beloved series.

Monica Owusu-Breen, who has worked as a writer on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has been tapped to write the pilot and act as showrunner on the rebooted series. Joss Whedon, who created the original series, will executive produce the new series and is working with Breen on the pilot script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The reboot will feature a black actress as Buffy, although the role has yet to be cast. The new series isn't attached to a network yet and THR predicts a bidding war when it's presented to streaming and cable networks later this summer.

In March 2017, Whedon commented on the possibility of a revival with the original cast.

"I see a little bit of what I call monkey's paw in these reboots. You bring something back, and even if it's exactly as good as it was, the experience can't be. You've already experienced it, and part of what was great was going through it for the first time. You have to meet expectations and adjust it for the climate, which is not easily," he said. "Luckily most of my actors still look wonderful, but I'm not worried about them being creaky. I'm more worried about me being creaky as a storyteller. You don't want that feeling that you should have left before the encore."
