Reese Witherspoon Reveals She Turned Down the Chance to Do More Episodes of Friends

Jennifer Aniston is just as shocked as the rest of us.

  • During a recent joint interview with Jennifer Aniston to promote their new AppleTV+ series, The Morning Show, Reese Witherspoon revealed that she was invited to return to Friends after her iconic guest role as Rachel's younger sister, Jill, but she said no.
  • The revelation was news to Aniston, who reacted with surprise. Witherspoon said she was "too nervous" to return to the beloved sitcom.

Let's just call this incident, "The One Where Reese Witherspoon Breaks Friends Fans' Hearts Forever."

In a new interview with the Associated Press to promote her AppleTV+ series, The Morning Show, Witherspoon dropped a Friends-related bombshell about her character, Jill Green—namely, that we all could have seen more of her. Turns out, Friends producers invited Witherspoon to return to the iconic sitcom and reprise her role as Rachel Green's little sis, but she said no.

The revelation was news to Witherspoon's Morning Show (and one-time Friends) costar, Jennifer Aniston, who was participating in the interview with her.

"Did you know they asked me back and I said I can't do it?" Witherspoon asked Aniston, who played her onscreen big sister in two back-to-back episodes of the sitcom in 2000. "I was too scared."

No, Aniston did not know that, apparently.

"How doth you say this?" Aniston said, echoing our collective shock at the news. "You got scared?"

"Yeah, they asked me to come back and I was like, 'I'm too nervous,'" Witherspoon said.

Needless to say, we're going to need some time to process this.
